“Greetings From…” to Aberdeen
The whole concept for this website started with a Facebook Group. People who have moved to Aberdeen are telling their stories, short and sweet, about how they ended up in Aberdeen, SD. Some came for great jobs, others for family, and some simply for the quality of life. Here’s what some have said:
Born and raised in Michigan. Traveled many areas of the world; returned to MI for a pit stop before my road trip west to NV in 1993. Dec. of 93; those western roads took me to Rapid City SD; one of my most favorite places ever! Rapid was home till 96 when I brought myself here to Aberdeen to become a non-trad at Presentation College. That winter of 96 made me wonder about my decision!! haha…but being from MI…I felt at home. Stuck around; finished school; de-stressing from finals joined the Y and was “bothered/stalked” by a man (now my husband). Mike promised me free McDonald’s french fries for life! How could I refuse? Married in 99. Aberdeen is my home. I am forever grateful for the many roads that led me here. – Brenda

Okay my story: I was born in Idaho, grew up in Grants Pass, Oregon, moved to North Dakota at 13-16 then came back to Oregon, moved back to ND in 2003 , then back to Oregon 2004, then in July of 2004 I hitchhiked with a cousin, and friend all the way from Oregon to South Dakota! true story!! it took us like,… 14-16 days or so. I lived in Rapid City for a few months, then moved to Aberdeen with a friend, lived there for a year, then moved back to Oregon, then moved back to Aberdeen in 2006, lived there for over a year! Now I’m back in Oregon. See Oregon is beautiful!!!! and my family lives here, but Aberdeen, SD is awesome, I had the most fun I ever had there, did new things, and mostly I love the people there, the cost of living, and the jobs! I have family in North Dakota, 4 hours north of Aberdeen! – Amy

Well, I grew up here in Aberdeen. When I was 16 my family moved to Sisseton. Five years later I returned back to Aberdeen to attend Northern State University. I guess even though my family roots are actually in Sisseton, Aberdeen feels like home to me! – Patricia

My story is simple. I moved to Aberdeen to go to Northern State University because that’s where my dad went, and my grandpa too. I got a degree, a great job, have made countless friends and found my wife here too. I am involved in many great events, and have no intentions on going anywhere, anytime soon. I can not think of a better community. – Bill

My family was born and raised in Southern California, Los Angeles area. My Grandmother moved to Columbia, SD after marrying her high school sweetheart sometime after the year 2000. Shortly after my Mother, Step Father, Sisters, and I moved up to Northern California, my Mother decided to follow my Grandmother out here to the midwest. I helped my family settle in Langford, SD before returning back to Southern California. Time passed and my Mother moved to Aberdeen to brave college. NSU has been her second home and she is now in her last semester! Missing my family ever so much and needing to spend more than just vacation time with them I moved to Aberdeen, SD! This last Halloween marked a whole year of being here. I enjoy the downtown area most of all. The people I have surrounded myself with are wonderful as well as the opportunities I have had here that a big city doesn’t have time to offer. Thank you. – Amanda

I moved to Aberdeen in1995 born and raised in “Hollister” California. My husband Knute Kumpf was born and raised here. I’m glad SD boys serve there country or I would have never of had the chance to meet him. We got married traveled around a little between Oregon and Washington. Then one day he said we could move to my… home town and 15 years later and 4 kids here we are. I love my home state, but Aberdeen grew on me and I just love it here. Great hardworking people. This is home to me!!! – Julie

My husband and I are both natives of the Chicago suburbs we started coming to the Aberdeen area in 96 and fell in love with it. We moved here permanently in 2004 and can’t imagine living in a big city again.
PS: We’re trying to get our children to move up here!
Thanks for your comment, Diane! And thanks for making Aberdeen your home!
Was born in Aberdeen in ’69 and my parents divorced in ’77. My mom and I moved to MPLS for a new start. I just visited Aberdeen for the first time since 1996 and while some of it has changed, it’s very much the same. Being a big city girl, I couldn’t make it my home but a visit once in a while will be in the cards. Starbucks and AT&T coverage is a necessity for my lifestyle. Also, the drivers on 6th REALLY need to drive as though there ARE lines on the road. I even checked to make sure my insurance card was with me-thought for sure I’d get clocked by a maniac and need it. Uff da.
Thanks for insight, Sydney. I agree, traffic just seems to go where it goes around here. But don’t get me started on MPLS traffic!!! I lived in LA for 11 years so I could handle MPLS, but it was a tad ruder than LA traffic. At least if we crash here we get out, look at the low impact damage and go home. If you crash on a metro freeway, it’s a 90 car pile up! And we do have a Starbucks…inside Target. As for At&T…this is small town…if you can’t reach someone on their phone, you just buzz over to their house. Keep visiting!!! We’d love to have you either way! Look us up at McQuillen Creative if you want a deeper tour of town.
